This character is an accurate representation of a real "MIKE Forces" sergeant. He is a member of a Special Forces detachment A-503 Mobile Strike Forces aka "MIKE Forces". "MIKE Forces" companies like A-503 normally operated at strengths of 184 men, while battalions had an authorized strength of 594 men. These Special Forces "MIKE Forces" or "MIKES" trained indigenous people in the outlying areas of the Republic of Vietnam. They were trained as a type of guerrilla soldier to counter the VC threat in different parts of Vietnam. They fought directly under Special Forces control until December 1966. After that time, they fell under joint U.S./Vietnamese control. Headgear varied in combat. The "boonie hat", commonly worn, was both produced in the U.S. and Vietnam. Soldiers modified this hat by trimming the brim or cutting it off entirely. For the "MIKEFORCE" character, I chose the beret. Personally, I prefer the look and distinction it carried. However, it wasn't worn as frequently as the "boonie hat" in a combat role. Select items used for reference were taken from authentic gear used in Vietnam. 5th SFG beret with flash and crest. Tiger stripe fatigues, named set. Rare first type jungle boots without nylon reinforcement of ankle or nylon at upper of boot. Emergency survival radio. U.S. Army M 1956 "Load Carrying Equipment" and accessories.
